Heat the oven to 170°C / 340°F. Butter and line a 23 cm / 9 in cake pan.

Melt the chocolate and butter together over low heat or in short microwave bursts. Stir until glossy.

In a large bowl, whisk the eggs with the sugar for 2 to 3 minutes until lighter and slightly airy.

Add the milk and vanilla, then slowly pour in the melted chocolate mixture while whisking.

Sift in the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.

Fold gently with a spatula until the batter is smooth, thick, and lump-free.

Pour the batter into the prepared pan and level the top.

Bake for 32 to 38 minutes, until the cake is risen and a skewer comes out with a few moist crumbs.

Cool in the pan for 15 minutes, then unmold and let the cake cool completely on a rack.

Finish with a light dusting of cocoa or powdered sugar. Add berries or softly whipped cream for a gourmet presentation.
